Peter Savile, chairman of the Professional Racing Association, presented Fakenham Racecourse with a Prize Money Plaque following the sixth race of the seven-race Greene King Raceday on Wednesday.
Savile, former chairman of the British Horseracing Board, praised the Norfolk course when making the presentation to Fakenham’s chief executive and clerk of the course, David Hunter.
“We went around all courses and asked about their total revenue and worked out the percentage returned in prize money.
“Fakenham was extremely high on the list but also, was incredibly helpful throughout,” he said.
“Racing authorities must get it right and encourage courses to do their bit with regard to prize money,” he added.
In receiving the plaque, Hunter said: “Racing faces huge challenges. Here we have invested in our infrastructure and take the issue of prize money very seriously. We keep prize money high on our list of spending priorities.”
The award comes just a couple of months before Fakenham’s New Year’s Day meeting which will have a record £130,000 of prize money on offer.
